India and Spain Begin Talks to Link UPI with Bizum, Enabling Easier Digital Payments for Indian Travellers
India and Spain have agreed to begin technical discussions on linking India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Spain’s Bizum digital payment platform. The proposed integration could allow Indian travellers to make QR-based payments in Spain using their existing UPI applications, offering greater convenience and reducing dependence on international cards and cash.
India and Spain have agreed to begin technical discussions on linking UPI with Bizum, a move that could transform the way Indian visitors make payments in Spain. The announcement followed Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Spain as part of his four-nation Europe tour from July 13 to 18.
During his visit, Piyush Goyal held discussions with several senior Spanish leaders, including Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, Spain’s First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, and Jordi Hereu Boher, Spain’s Minister of Industry and Tourism.
Among various areas of cooperation, both countries discussed digital payment connectivity and agreed to initiate technical talks to explore the interoperability of India’s UPI system with Bizum, one of Spain’s widely used mobile payment platforms. The discussions will focus on ensuring that both systems can operate together securely and efficiently.
If the integration is successfully completed in the future, Indian travellers visiting Spain could potentially use their regular UPI-enabled applications for payments without requiring separate local payment applications. This could simplify transactions for tourists and reduce dependence on international cards, cash withdrawals, currency exchange services, or travel forex cards.
UPI has become a widely adopted digital payment method in India, with people using it for everyday transactions such as shopping, restaurant payments, transportation services, and expense sharing. However, international travel often requires users to rely on alternative payment methods that may involve additional charges, unfavourable exchange rates, or the inconvenience of handling physical currency.
A successful UPI-Bizum connection could provide Indian travellers with a more convenient digital payment experience while visiting Spain. However, the facility is not currently available, and travellers cannot yet use UPI directly across Spain.
At present, India and Spain have only agreed to begin the technical discussions required for the proposed integration. Details regarding the implementation timeline, rollout strategy, participating banks, and supported payment applications have not been announced.
India is also working to expand UPI-based payment cooperation with other international partners. During the same Europe tour, discussions were held with Estonia regarding fintech cooperation and possible UPI integration. UPI services have already expanded internationally in several countries, including France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Qatar.
The proposed UPI-Bizum integration marks an important step in strengthening digital payment cooperation between India and Spain. Although the service is not yet operational and several technical aspects remain under discussion, the agreement has opened the path for a future where Indian travellers may be able to make seamless QR-based payments across Spain using familiar digital payment platforms.
